Super Exciting Update

The DO team is at the UNC Water & Health Conference, and CTO & Co-founder Abe Wright had the chance to meet William Kamkwamba, the author and subject of The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, a remarkable and inspiring story of courage, perseverence, and hope. From Kasungu, Malawi, William grew up in a region ravaged by famine and drought. After reading about electricity in old science textbooks, he dreamed of providing this luxury to his own community. Using the books, he taught himself how electricity worked until he built his own windmill out of discarded materials to power multiple appliances in his home and eventually the village’s broken water pump. And he did all this as a kid! If you haven’t read the book or seen the film adaptation, definitely check them out!

It’s been a great privilege to collaborate this week with so many inspiring, intelligent people who care deeply about alleviating poverty through sustainable solutions.
