Sanitation refers to the safe and hygienic management of human waste and wastewater, which is essential for promoting public health and reducing the risk of waterborne diseases. Inadequate sanitation facilities and poor hygiene practices are major contributors to diarrheal diseases, which remain a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in many parts of the world, particularly in low-income and rural areas. In addition, current latrine options around the world are expensive, unreliable, and sometimes even dangerous if the pits collapse.

Recognizing the critical importance of sustainable and affordable sanitation solutions in reducing poverty, Design Outreach assembled a team of experts in project management, engineering, human factors design, sanitation, soil mechanics, and polymer manufacturing. The result of their work is LifeLatrine, an innovative and affordable latrine solution designed for single-family use in rural communities, with the capability of being emptied and possibly removed and reused.

By promoting better health and hygiene, families can benefit from reduced incidences of waterborne diseases and improve their overall quality of life. Moreover, LifeLatrine provides families with an affordable latrine option that allows them to address their basic sanitation needs with dignity. Through our commitment to innovation and community engagement, we aim to empower vulnerable communities and make a lasting impact on global health and wellbeing.
