Design Outreach is a Christian research and development organization that seeks to alleviate global poverty by creating innovative, life-sustaining solutions that help transform marginalized and low-income communities physically, economically, and spiritually. As a team of engineers with diverse experience and areas of expertise, DO focuses on innovative products that improve the lives of the most marginalized and vulnerable people living in developing countries. As followers of Jesus Christ, we desire to share and show God’s love by providing technologies that empower people to break the cycle of poverty.

why we exist - the need

It is said that 90% of products cater to 10% of the world's population, leaving billions without necessities such as clean water, sanitation, and basic healthcare. We exist to bridge the gap and meet the critical needs of marginalized communities who are often forgotten.

The scale and immediacy of the needs we face are staggering. For instance, statistics show that more than one in three people worldwide lacks access to clean water, forcing women and children to make perilous journeys daily to fetch water that is often contaminated.

Our flagship product LifePump™ has made a significant impact on water poverty by providing a sustainable source of safe water in rural communities, and we continue to prioritize our work in this critical area. We are also actively engaged in a range of other initiatives that are just as urgent and pressing. These initiatives are particularly important because so few organizations are focused on finding solutions to these neglected areas of need.

It is imperative that our solutions are sustainable to achieve the desired impact. This is why we strive for excellence in everything we do, recognizing that our mission is not just about water, pumps, or innovative technologies that sustain life. Rather, it is about people—individuals created in the image of God.

Reliable Solutions

We exist to meet the many needs of marginalized communities by developing and deploying sustainable technologies that empower people to thrive. Our flagship product, LifePump, is a perfect example of the power of humanitarian engineering. These reliable and robust hand pumps have been operating for many years, providing a reliable and sustainable source of clean water.

In contrast, studies have revealed that many hand pumps break down within just a few months of installation and typically take around 30 days to be repaired. During this period, the affected community is left without access to clean water. Men, women, and children are forced to spend their days searching for water, often resorting to contaminated sources. This, in turn, hinders other critical activities such as running businesses, farming, education, and maintaining good health, ultimately undermining long-term community development. LifePump is different, proving our commitment to sustainability and true lasting change.

By working with like-minded organizations to provide communities with sustainable technologies they can count on, we build trust with the communities we are privileged to serve, opening hearts to the hope of the Gospel. We partner with local pastors and evangelistic organizations to share the good news of the Gospel and connect people with local churches. By working together, we can empower communities with sustainable solutions that meet their needs and foster lasting positive change—both here on earth and for eternity.

To this end, we develop technologies that are relevant, reliable, and repeatable.

Relevant

We develop technologies that are relevant to and appropriate for the unique needs of low-income communities who are too often overlooked by the innovators of the world. We work closely with residents of these communities and global partners to identify pressing needs. To be relevant, our technologies must answer the distinct needs of the community while also navigating the challenges of operating in a remote location.

Reliable

We strive to make a lasting difference in the lives of others by creating technologies that will perform well with minimal maintenance. The technologies we deploy must be of the highest quality and durable to ensure a consistent, long-term solution that helps to break the cycle of poverty.

Repeatable

We design technologies that have the potential for economic sustainability and scalability. We work to empower each local community to take ownership of the technology through advocacy and training. By considering factors that increase repeatability, we maximize the impact of each technology and the number of people who can benefit.
