“Christ sits at the center of our lives, and my main goal in life is to glorify Him. That may mean doing it through providing clean water, educating engineering students, or by providing guidance and encouragement to a nonprofit. Each of these actions can have meaning, purpose, and serve the greater goal of helping others in Jesus’ name, glorifying Him.” – Michelle Lockwood, DO’s newest Board Member
We are excited to welcome Michelle Lockwood to the Design Outreach Board of Directors. Michelle has a passion for Christ, mission-field experience in Africa, and experience as a civil and environmental engineer. She currently serves as a senior lecturer in the School of Science, Engineering, and Health at Messiah University in Pennsylvania.
Michelle’s area of engineering specialty aligns perfectly with DO’s mission. Her work and interests are in civil and environmental engineering, particularly the areas of water resource and fluid mechanics.
This combination of engineering know-how and real-world mission work makes her a unique asset to DO’s efforts. Michelle and her husband served as missionaries in Africa for 10 years, first in Zimbabwe and then in South Africa.
Her connection to DO is through a former student: DO Co-Founder Abe Wright. She and Abe connected a few years ago at a conference and kept in touch. She sees serving on the board as an opportunity to share her expertise, experience, and love of God to support DO’s mission-minded engineering work. Her knowledge of fundraising, living cross-culturally, and being on the mission field will be beneficial to DO’s work. She also hopes to be a conduit for future DO interns and team members. She is excited to be able to show her students real-world examples of engineers who have a heart for God and are doing meaningful work to help others.
Michelle and her husband Steve of 27 years live in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania. They have five children ranging from 16 to 26 and love spending time as a family enjoying the outdoors, hiking, swimming, playing games, and traveling.
