Support Michael Cook
The Challenge: 12 Days - 1,315 miles - $50,000
The Golden Cup was founded in 2020 by long-time Design Outreach (DO) supporter Michael Cook. Michael had the vision to ride 1,300 miles on his e-bike to raise funds for LifePumps that will provide safe and reliable water to rural communities in Malawi. He set out to raise awareness and funds, and along the way, he started a movement.
Wheels in Motion for Malawi – The Golden Cup 2021
Michael is taking the challenge on again in 2021 to ride another 1,300+ section of the Transamerica Bicycle Trail and raise more funds for Malawi. He will be accompanied by his wife Rebecca and their support and gear (SAG) vehicle named “Jubilee”.
The ride will begin in West Yellowstone, Montana, where the 2020 ride ended. Along the way, he will traverse the Rocky Mountains as he rides through Wyoming and Colorado and then start across the plains of Kansas to finish his trek in Eureka, Kansas. He will be riding from June 21 through July 3.

The Golden Cup Ride 2021: Team Michael
Campaign Code: LP-93
Last year, Design Outreach engineering volunteer Michael Cook felt called to raise funds for LifePumps for people in Malawi by riding a 1300+ mile section of the Transamerica Bicycle Trail. His ride inspired co-workers from DePuy Synthes in Indiana to “match Michael’s miles” and support the fundraising effort, raising enough funds to provide five LifePumps that will be installed in Malawi this summer.
Michael and wife Rebecca are planning for this summer’s ride that will cover another 1315 miles starting at West Yellowstone, Montana, where the 2020 ride ended. Along the way, he will traverse the Rocky Mountains and pass-through Wyoming and Colorado, and then start across the plains of Kansas, where he will finish the ride. He will be riding from June 21-July 3.
