The Golden Cup is an in-person (or virtual) walk, run, ride held over two weeks to raise funds to provide access to water for rural communities in Malawi that would not otherwise have access to safe and reliable water. Our goal is to raise $105,000 – enough to equip seven communities in Malawi with a LifePump™, LifePumpLink, and COVID-19 training and supplies, including face masks, soap, and handwashing stations.
Founded in 2020 by long-time Design Outreach (DO) supporter Michael Cook, the Golden Cup began as one man’s mission to ride 1,300 miles on his e-bike in an effort to bring clean water to Malawi and give glory to God to celebrate his 50th birthday. Michael set out to raise awareness and funds, and with it he started a movement.

The need for a source of clean water within a community is urgent and necessary:
- Approximately 2.2 billion people don't have nearby access to safe and reliable water.
- Approximately 2,300 people (often children) die daily from water-borne diseases.
- Current water systems in rural Africa are dangerous and unreliable, driving people back to unsafe water sources.
- Women and children can spend 4 to 8 hours a day seeking and carrying water.
- Without reliable sources of water, communities cannot thrive, and the cycle of poverty remains unbroken.
DO created the LifePump™, a robust, heavy duty, long lasting hand pump that requires low maintenance and can go deeper than any other hand pump. With the LifePumpLink, a satellite-based remote monitor, DO field technicians can anticipate maintenance needs and achieve our zero days without water goal.
Take Action: Participate in the Golden Cup
Teams and individuals can participate by doing a fun activity to raise funds over the two weeks of the Golden Cup initiative (June 21-July 3). The activities can be physical like a walk, ride, or run (even swim or kayak!) or can be creative, such as a kid’s carnival—you decide! Registration is just $50.
Join our movement to alleviate global poverty through life-sustaining technology.
Malawi - The Warm Heart of Africa
Malawi is known as the “warm heart of Africa” because of its enthusiastic and kind people. However, for many Malawians, safe and reliable water is not a reality.
Our Vision: To see marginalized and low-income communities transformed physically, economically, and spiritually.
