Let’s team up on this marathon we call “life” to help others in need!

The arrival of the COVID-19 virus has caused most of our lives to be turned upside-down and has caused fear in areas of our lives that we used to take for granted, with communities around the world being thrown into panic mode. The way the virus has been operating is a clear message to all of us that we need to look out for the safety of our neighbors and communities even more than we have in the past. As cases of COVID-19 begin to infiltrate Malawi, the poorest & most vulnerable families who don’t even have access to safe drinking water, soap, or face coverings, and cannot reliably practice social distancing, are facing catastrophic consequences without intervention.

Rebecca and I are inspired to help the dear people of Malawi and are asking for you to join us! To bring attention to how we can all be empowered to help others, I am riding my **e-bike approximately 1,316 miles on the TransAmerica Bicycle trail to raise funds for the HandWASHing for ALL initiative through Design Outreach. Rebecca and I are planning to head out on June 8th from Astoria, OR and go to West Yellowstone, MT. Rebecca will drive the “Support and Gear” (SAG) wagon and we will camp along the way. With the opening of travel restrictions, we feel comfortable that this “solo ride” can be done in a safe and socially responsible manner, where we can practice social distancing with our mini-motorhome.

**No worries, I will still need to pedal and burn a tremendous amount of calories. E-bike technology allows me to go faster and further in a given amount of time.

Our goal is to raise $30,000 to provide 2-3 villages (serving 750-3,000 people) in Malawi with:

  • the complete installation & monitoring of a LifePump & LifePumpLink for access to safe water
  • hand soap and WASH (Water, Sanitation, & Hygiene) training on the importance of using soap for fighting the spread of COVID-19
  • cloth face coverings (masks) to prevent the spread of COVID-19 when social distancing isn’t practical

A gift of just $150 gives hygiene training and access to a LifePump with a LifePumpLink, hand soap, and face masks to three individuals, giving a small family the ability to stay healthy and strong. Employees of Johnson & Johnson (and other employers) are eligible to have their gifts matched, multiplying the impact we are making together!

About the LifePump Project

Design Outreach is collaborating with overseas partners, local governments in Africa and Haiti, and individuals like you to install LifePump™ across the globe.

More than 840 million people around the world do not have access to safe and reliable water. Many women and children walk 3 to 5 miles a day to find water. Design Outreach seeks to make a significant impact on these statistics through LifePump, a deep-reaching, durable hand pump designed to last years with minimal maintenance. Thousands of lives in Kenya, Ethiopia, Mali, Malawi, Zambia, South Sudan, and Haiti already have been directly impacted by the installation of LifePump.

We are very grateful for our fundraising champions and many others for sponsoring LifePumps for communities in Africa and Haiti. These pumps will provide safe and reliable water for tens of thousands of people who desperately need it.
