Going to the bathroom is not something one discusses in polite conversation. However, the way that much of the world handles human waste can be a matter of life and death.
The story of 15-year-old Cecilia Leward and her family from Chikwangwala Village in Malawi has greatly impacted our Design Outreach (DO) team, both here in Malawi and in the United States.
The weather was very rainy in the morning, but the rain cleared in early afternoon and became a very pleasant day, in spite of a mild headwind most of the day.
Today (Tuesday) was a beautiful day to ride from Canon City, CO, to Sugar City, CO, with very comfortable temperatures and a slight headwind. I arrived safely in Sugar City at 7:15 PM after riding 118.69 miles, according to Strava.
Rebecca and I made it safely to Silverthorne, CO, Saturday evening at about 6:45 PM and met my brother, Laban, and Deanna there. We drove to their house in Denver and enjoyed a rest day on Sunday with them.
Tonight we reached Rand, CO, on schedule! Today was a shorter ride than usual (90.16 miles according to Strava) due to riding an extra 20 miles yesterday.
Today on Day 3, I rode from Dubois, WY, to Jeffrey City, WY, with Strava recording 130.76 miles. The weather varied from sunny and hot to a mild rain (which was quite refreshing) to overcast and quite comfortable.
Today was another wonderful day, with a bit of a shorter ride today of 100.26 miles according to Strava. The weather was sunny and warm, with a low of 63° this morning and a high in the upper 80’s.
Design Outreach’s summer internship program is in full swing. Qinan Zhou and Nick Carlson, DO’s new interns, are working closely with Principal Engineer Naja Robinson and Project Engineer Daniel Wang on several of our current projects, including building the test stand for a fourth-generation gearbox used in LifePump and designing the handle for autoLifePump, to gain some real-world experience in engineering.
Design Outreach leaders recently returned from doing field work in Malawi and Zambia where they conducted training, installed LifePumps and LifePumpLinks, met with partners and governmental officials and made plans for future impact.
